History of the GAFBMP

The German Armed Forces Badge for Military Proficiency (GAFBMP) was introduced into the German Armed Forces in February 1971. The idea behind it was to combine a civilian German sports badge with strictly military type events in order to show the embedding of the Armed Forces in the society they serve as well as to create a challenging event for soldiers of all ages. The competition consists of: 200 meter swim, track and field events, 9mm pistol shoot, first aid test, and ruck march.  All events have to be finished within one year.  For the German Soldier the GAFBMP is an annual event. Passing it is a prerequisite to become a German Noncommissioned or Commissioned Officer.  United States Armed Forces Soldiers and foreign students are authorized to compete for the GAFBMP.

The Events.

For the track and field events, participants compete in a sprint; a long jump or high jump; a shot put throw, bench press, or weight lift; and a long distance run or long distance swim.  The ruck march is 12.5 miles, 15 miles, 15.6 miles, or 18.7 miles depending on age of participant.  Participants are awarded Gold, Silver, or Bronze decorations for successfully completing the events.
